A desktop that suddenly loses WiFi can stop work, school, streaming, and just about everything else. If your desktop wont connect to wifi, the problem may be as simple as a disabled adapter or as involved as a failing network card, router issue, or Windows setting. The good news: you can rule out the common causes without taking risks or making major changes to your computer.
Start with the easy checks, then move toward the settings that require a little more attention. If the connection is still down, a technician can diagnose whether the trouble is with the desktop, your router, or the network itself.
First, confirm the problem is really the desktop
Before changing settings on the computer, check whether another device can get online through the same WiFi network. Try a phone, tablet, or laptop while standing near the desktop.

Look at the back of the desktop for small screw-on antennas. They are often connected to gold-colored ports on the rear panel or on a separate expansion card. If antennas are loose, missing, or positioned behind a large metal computer case, WiFi range can suffer significantly. Tighten them gently and move them upright if possible.
If there are no antennas, check Windows. Open Settings, choose Network & Internet, and look for a WiFi option. If WiFi does not appear anywhere, the desktop may lack a wireless adapter, the adapter may be disabled, or its driver may not be working.
A USB WiFi adapter can be a reasonable low-cost solution for light home use. For a desktop used for remote work, gaming, large file transfers, or business applications, an internal PCIe WiFi card or a properly placed wired connection is usually more reliable. The best option depends on the computer’s location and how much connection stability matters.
When a desktop wont connect to WiFi, try these safe fixes
Work through these steps one at a time. After each one, try connecting again. That makes it easier to know what actually fixed the issue.
- Restart the desktop. A restart clears many temporary driver and network service problems. Use Restart rather than simply shutting down and turning the PC back on, since some Windows systems use fast startup during a normal shutdown.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off. In Windows, open the network area near the clock or go to Settings and Network & Internet. Airplane mode should be turned off, and WiFi should be turned on.
- Forget and rejoin the network. Select your WiFi network, choose Forget, then connect again and carefully enter the password. This helps when saved credentials are outdated or a router security setting changed.
- Move closer to the router temporarily. If the desktop connects when moved closer or when the router is moved, signal strength is the likely issue. A mesh WiFi system, access point, better adapter, or Ethernet cable may be a better long-term fix than repeatedly reconnecting.
- Check the date and time. An incorrect system clock can interfere with secure connections, especially on business, school, hotel, or public networks. Set the time to update automatically, then try again.
Look for a disabled or faulty WiFi adapter
Windows can show a WiFi option even when the adapter has a problem. To check it, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager. Expand Network adapters and look for a wireless adapter name. It may include terms such as Wireless, Wi-Fi, WLAN, Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, or MediaTek.
A small down arrow on the adapter can mean it is disabled. Right-click it and select Enable device. A yellow warning symbol usually indicates a driver or hardware problem.
Do not uninstall random devices if you are unsure which one is the wireless adapter. It is possible to remove a driver and make the troubleshooting process longer. Instead, restart the computer first. If the warning remains, update the wireless driver using the desktop manufacturer’s support software or a known-good driver source.
Driver problems are common after a Windows update, a power outage, or a system migration. They can also happen after installing antivirus, VPN, or security software that changes network settings. Check the router settings only when other devices have issues

Network reset removes saved WiFi networks, VPN settings, and some custom network configuration. That may be fine for a home desktop, but it can create extra work on a company computer that uses a VPN, fixed IP address, mapped resources, or specialized security tools. Write down important connection details before using it.
If your desktop works on Ethernet but not WiFi, network reset may help. If neither Ethernet nor WiFi works while other devices are online, the issue could involve Windows networking, security software, or a more serious system problem.
